Excepts from the Daily Evolver Dialogs
… a weekly conversation on an integral view of current events, with Jeff Salzman and David Riordan, published by Integral Life.
This week’s Daily Evolver focuses on the Republican controlled New York State Senate approving the marriage of same-sex couples. This victory in one of the biggest states in the union is being trumpeted as a major step forward for gay rights.
If there is any lingering doubt that marriage equality in today’s world is in fact a developmental or evolutionary issue, it might be useful to consider the following quote from NY State Senator and conservative Republican Roy McDonald (bold added for emphasis):
“You get to the point where you evolve in your life where everything isn’t black and white, good and bad, and you try to do the right thing. You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, fuck it, I don’t care what you think. I’m trying to do the right thing. I’m tired of Republican-Democrat politics. They can take the job and shove it. I come from a blue-collar background. I’m trying to do the right thing, and that’s where I’m going with this.”
In this conversation, David and I explore the developmental aspects of marriage equality, taking a look at the events that led up to New York approving gay marriage and identifying the grassroots players and those at high levels of leadership that got this pushed through—in a Republican controlled Senate, of all places. We also look at what this vote says about President Obama’s leadership on this issue—or as some of his critics have suggested, his outright lack of leadership. Why has Obama consistently claimed that gay marriage is an issue for the States to decide, when there are still 41 states banning gay marriage? And lastly, we discuss conditions of “love” that can help us change our minds about something that may have been challenging to us at one point or another. Evolution is certainly at play in this story, as marriage equality is rapidly becoming the norm with 53% of the American public in support.
