This past Sunday night, we heard the news that Osama bin Laden was killed by an elite U.S. military operation in Abbottabad, Pakistan, just months before the ten-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Though at first we were all shocked into silence by the announcement, it didn’t take long for the shock to give way to an eruption of emotion all across America, as thousands spontaneously took to the streets to celebrate the death of the 21st century’s most hated villain. At the same time, there were many who did not share the raw exuberance they were seeing on the television, and were instead feeling an assortment of other emotions—quiet pride and retribution, gleaming awe and achievement, somber remorse and heartache, and just about every other emotional variation our limbic systems would allow.
As the media and the politicians continue to figure out how to talk about this—and as we continue to figure out how exactly we are all feeling about this—we wanted to offer some of our own initial thoughts about this stunning development, while setting the stage for a much longer exploration of the personal, national, and global impacts of Bin Laden’s death and the War on Terror.
