In this conversation, David and I explore the recent hurricane and earthquakes experienced by the East Coast of the U.S. and how it might inform our understanding of climate change. We look at the sorts of meaning-making narratives that different levels of cultural development employ to understand the earth changes we been experiencing in recent years. Even before Hurricane Irene had hit the coast, the storm was being strangely politicized–most notably, Ron Paul calling for the obsolescence of FEMA, Eric Cantor insisting that hurricane relief funds directly translate into further spending cuts, and Michelle Bachman describing the earthquakes and hurricane as a “wake up call from God” (in which case, one can only wonder what those Texans must have done to deserve God’s wrath as they suffer one of the worst droughts in recent history….)
We know that climate change is a pivotal global issue that cannot be addressed by individual nation states alone. What do we make of what science tells us about the changing climate, and how do we navigate the fear, denial, and apathy that still pervades the media? How should we invest our personal attention and energy to help overcome this global problem? How can we use the Integral lens to help serve the greatest depth for the greatest span, reducing suffering in ourselves and around the planet? Finally, I will share with you some of my personal feelings about how I hold these massive changes that are taking place planet wide, as evolution continues to surge boldly into the future.
